This project focuses on research to develop businesses that use or create renewable resources to improve marine and river ecosystems, reduce pollution, increase resilience to climate change and help existing businesses adapt to reduce their environmental impact. The consortium participating in this project will generate interconnected funding for research and innovative solutions based on an ecosystem approach, facilitating the ecological transition of the Bulgarian lower reaches of the river. This initiative aims to promote sustainable, climate-resilient activities along the Danube and Black Sea coasts, having a positive impact on water quality and resources. The proposed business plan for the BLUE CRISTAL CoC is based on collaborative research and development efforts between partners to transform local industries into resource-efficient business models. This transformation will involve developing and testing innovative solutions, while increasing the capacity of local communities for effective implementation. It is important to recognize that resources and related economic activities vary across these regions, spanning many sectors, including transport, energy, agriculture, construction, mining, textiles, chemicals, ICT, tourism and creative and leisure industries. The development of different sectoral activities within specific territories will leverage the interconnected water basins of the Danube and the Black Sea. This connectivity provides a unique opportunity to re-align local economies with the principles of the circular economy. By promoting concentrated investment in research and innovation, we can achieve significant environmental benefits and facilitate the transition to a circular economy, where the value of products, materials and resources is preserved for as long as possible, thereby minimizing waste generation. The planned business strategy includes multiple work packages aimed at replacing traditional technologies with bio-based and clean alternatives, transitioning from conventional energy sources to renewables, and introducing innovative mechatronic solutions together with smart socio-economic management models. This transformation will apply to established economic sectors in coastal regions, such as transport, energy, manufacturing, tourism, agriculture and recreation, while exploring new sectors that can unlock regional potential through creative activities.
Our research adopts a multidisciplinary approach, integrating components from the three priority areas of ISIS 2021-2027. It focuses specifically on two key thematic areas related to the blue economy in coastal regions: “Clean technologies, circular and low-carbon economy” and “New technologies in the creative and leisure industries”. The main objective of the project is to significantly advance scientific research and to contribute pragmatically to the smart and sustainable use of resources in the Bulgarian section of the Danube River and the Black Sea, promoting growth in all economic and social spheres.
To achieve these ambitious goals, we will create a blue innovation ecosystem built on a distributed research infrastructure within the BLUE CRISTAL CoC. This CoC will be in line with the integrated territorial strategies in the North Central, North-East and South-East planning regions and the development plans of the neighboring municipalities. The implementation of this strategy will improve the region’s ability to adapt to the transformational changes during the industrial transition, supported by research, innovation, collaboration and technological progress, while prioritizing the protection of human and natural capital.
